Essay Contest - Essays were due by Feb. 7th.  Congratulations to Sarah Adrian Rice, winner of the Club's contest this year.  Click here to read her winning essay.

Oratorical Contest - The winner of the Club's Contest this year is Madison Thomas-Buenos for his speech, given April 3rd on this year's topic, "Why Me? Why Not?"  Congratulations to Madison!  Madison will now move on to the Zone Contest.  Zone 2's contest will be held April 19th; it will be hosted by the Rockville Club starting at 2:00 PM at the Rockville Library in Rockville's new Town Square, 21 Maryland Ave., Rockville, MD 20850, Phone: 240-777-0140.

Meetings

Barbara and Bruce Grewe provided fine hospitality for the Board Meeting at their home on April 1st.  Seven members attended and the following items were discussed:

bulletS/T Ed gave a brief financial report.  He has ordered the $100 Savings Bond for the winner of our Club's Essay Contest, Ms. Sarah Rice, and has paid Shumsky for items ordered for that Contest.  More items have been ordered for the Oratorical Contest and the Club still owes for them.
bulletEd received a call from Colleen at the City of Rockville saying we are good to go for selling water and sodas at this year's Memorial Day Parade in Rockville.  The route of the parade will be somewhat different from previous years so one of our two stands will be relocated.
bulletOur Club's Oratorical Contest will be held as planned on April 3rd at the Courtyard by Marriott on Research Blvd. although we only have one contestant.  Since he automatically will be the winner, this will be an opportunity for him to present his speech in a dry run and for club members to offer constructive suggestions.
bulletThe Club will be hosting the Zone Oratorical Contest on April 19th at the new Rockville Library in Rockville Town Square.  The contest will start at 2:00 PM and we expect at least 5 contestants.  Some details are still to be worked out.
bulletPresident Barbara received a nice e-mail from Gov. Tom thanking us for having him and Lt. Gov. (Zone 7) John to our Dinner Meeting on March 18th.  All agreed we enjoyed having them.
bulletWe will not have a Dinner Meeting this month because we have the two Oratorical Contests.  The next Board Meeting will be at Virginia and Bert Boline's home on May 6th starting at 7:00 PM.

After the meeting on April 1st, President Barbara received a call from Pam Bowman, Chairwoman for the District's Essay Contest, letting her know that our Club's contestant, Ms. Sarah Rice, won the District's Essay Contest.  Congratulations to Sarah; well done!

Board members enjoyed the hospitality of Jim and Christine as we met at their home on March 4th.  Five members attended and the following items were discussed:

bulletThe Essay Contest was won by Sarah Adrian Rice.  Chairwoman Barbara passed out copies of the entries we received.  She will send out medals and certificates to the contestants.  Ed will order the $100 Savings Bond for the winner, Ms. Rice.  Barbara also will present token thank you gifts to the judges.
bulletJennifer has reserved a meeting room at the Rockville Library for our Club to host the Zone 2 Oratorical Contest on April 19th.  Starting time for the contest is scheduled to be 2:00 PM.  The cost for the room is $15/hr and we have it reserved for 3 hours.
bulletThe Club's Oratorical Contest will be held on April 3rd starting at 7:00 PM.  It will be held again at the Courtyard by Marriott on Research Blvd.  So far we have no official entries though some have expressed interest.   Peter is working on getting the contest publicized and getting entries.
bulletThe Memorial Day Parade - we need to contact the City of Rockville to find out if we will be able to sell bottled water and sodas there again this year.  With the new Town Square the parade may be along a new route.  Ed noted that the city must have a new coordinator for special events as the Gazette said that Andrew Klee, the coordinator for the past two years, has moved on.  Ed will call the city and try to find out if we will be able to sell drinks again to raise funds for the Club.
bulletNext year's President - we need a volunteer.  The Officer Elect Report is due to OI and the District by May 20th.
bulletThe next Dinner/Social Meeting will be on March 18 at Piccolo Mondo Italian Restaurant, Leisure World Plaza, off Georgia Ave. between Rt. 28 (Norbeck Rd.) and Bel Pre Rd., Silver Spring, starting at 6:30 PM.
bulletThe next Board Meeting will be  on April 1st at Barbara and Bruce Grewe's home starting at 7:30 PM.
bulletThere will be no Dinner/Social Meeting in April because we are having the Oratorical Contests then.
